Max Miller's school cafeteria recipe. I did not adjust it for a standard, single-pound package of ground round. I think I would still be tempted to add ¼ tsp baking soda to the beef at the beginning.
| 1¾ pound (800 g) | ground beef |
| ¼ cup | fresh diced onion |
| ¾ tsp | garlic powder |
| 10 tbsp (160 g) | tomato paste |
| 10 tbsp (165 g) | ketchup |
| 1 cup + 2 tbsp (265 ml) | water |
| 3 tbsp + 2 tsp | apple cider vinegar |
| 1½ tsp | dry mustard |
| ¼ tsp | of black pepper |
| 4 tsp | brown sugar |
| 8 | hamburger buns |
Heat skillet over medium high. Break up and brown the beef.
Add garlic powder, onions and simmer 5 minutes.
Add tomato paste, ketchup, water and vinegar.
Add mustard, pepper and brown sugar.
Reduce to low and simmer for 25-50 minutes.
Serve ⅓-½ cup filling on bun.
